1:00 pm Strong Gales and fine Weather but the Seas running very high from the SE keeps us constantly bailing and wet.
6:00 pm The Sun set in heavy clouds and watery so that we again expect wet weather. Served 1/24 pound of Bread and a Jill of water for Supper.
9:00 pm Several heavy Seas broke over us and near filling the Boat. Obliged to carry Sail yet tremble every minute for losing my mast.
12:00 am Very Wet, but no cold as when it Rains. Very dark night.
6:00 am Very
Squally with a very hard Gale.
We take the course of the sea which happily keeps a western direction.
Served 1/24 pound of Bread and a
Jill of water for Breakfast.
12:00 pm Fair Weather but no abatement of the Gale or Sea.
Keeping right before it and the foam running over our quarters. With great difficulty and being
propped up I got an observation.
Served 1/24 pound Bread and a
Jill of water for Dinner.
Our Situation to day highly perilous. If ever Men experienced the power and goodness of Divine providence we do at this instant in a most emminent degree, and I presume to say our present situation would make the boldest Seaman tremble that ever lived. We are obliged to take the Course of the Sea, running right before it and breaking all over us. Watching with the utmost care, as the least error in the Helm would in a moment be our destruction. As we suffered not such cold as when wet with the Rain I only issued 1/24 pound Bread and a Jill of water to each meal. At noon it blew very hard and the foam of the Sea kept running over our Stern and quarters, I however got proped up and made an observation.
