Tuesday, May. 12, 1789

12:00 am Fresh Gale can keep our course pretty steadily, bearing up to the NW only every five or ten minutes when the sea runs remarkably high, which I make up for by Steering more to the Southward when we can

5:00 am Constant Rain and very cold. One man Ill of the Cholick. Served a tea spoonfull of Rum and a morsel of Bread. Our situation now in every respect truly miserable. Limbs very much crampt.

9:00 am Moderate Breezes and Cloudy Weather with Rain

12:00 pm Calm and Cloudy. Most of us complaining of a violent shivering. Served 1/24 pound Bread and a Jill of water for dinner. No Sun. Saw Fish but cannot catch any. Some Tropic Birds. Our cloaths will not dry.

Journal

Having again experienced a dreadfull Night of it, the day showed to me a poor miserable set of Beings full of wants but nothing to releive them. Some complained of a great pains in their Bowels and all of having but little use of their Limbs. What sleep we got was scarce refreshing being covered with Sea and Rain, and two persons were always obliged to keep bailing. I served my teaspoonfull of Rum at day dawn as usual, and 1/24 of a pound of Bread with a Jill of water for Supper, Breakfast and Dinner.

At noon almost Calm and no sun to be seen. Some of us shivering with Cold. The direction of my Course is to pass to the northward of the New Hebrides.
