H M Ship Providence from St Helena Islands towards [St. Vincents in the West Indies – 1793]

Thursday January 3d

 1 pm: Moderate breeze and fine weather – Sailmaker repairing the Fore Top Mast Staysail – Saw a Gannet Boobie

 5 pm: Ditto Weather – Served Tobacco to the Ships Company – Unbent the Best, & bent the old Fore Top Mast Staysail

 8 pm: Cloudy weather

 9 pm: In Royals

12 mid: Frequent Showers of small Rain

 3 am: A Heavy shower of rain

 4 am: Light breezes and thick cloudy weather

 5 am: Moderate breeze and fair weather – set the Royals – Saw flying fish – Served thick portable Soup gruel for Breakfast

 8 am: Ditto Weather – cleaned below and aired with fires – Exercised great guns & small Arms – Sailmakers repairing the Mizen Top Sail Carpenters fixing swivel stocks – People making Mats spinning spun yarn &c – Served Krout and broached a Puncheon of Spruce beer

12 noon: Latitude Observed 6°..07′ South
