Tobin's Providence Logbook Jan 2, 1793

[H M S Providence from St Helena Islands towards] St. Vincents in the West Indies – 1793

Wednesday January 2d

 1 pm: Moderate breeze and fine weather – at 1 hoisted out the Yawl & sent her to Lieutenant Portlock for him – at 2 the Island of Ascension bore SSE½E 13 or 14 Leagues distant, Saw flocks of Gannet boobies – at ½ past 6 Lieutenant Portlock returned to the Assistant – in Boat – Worked the Pumps as usual

12 mid: Fine weather

 5 am: Saw Gannet Boobies & flying fish – served thick portable Soup gruel for breakfast

 8 am: Fine clear weather – cleaned below & aired with fires Exercised great guns & small Arms – Sailmaker as yesterday – Read the Articles of War and served Slops to the Ships Company – Portable Soup in the Pease for dinner & Krout as usual

12 noon: Moderate breeze & fine weather
