1 pm: Light breezes and cloudy weather – saw small Nautili & some birds of the Gull kind

 5 pm: At ¾ past 5 Saw the Island of St Helena bearing W½Squall made the Signal accordingly – worked the pumps

 7 pm: Saw St Helena Pidgeons (a small white Sea bird so called by Seamen) at 8 Light Airs

10 pm: Light breezes and cloudy, in steering Sails, Top Gallant Sails and up courses

12 mid: In 1st Reef Main & Mizen & 21d Fore Top Sail – at ¼ past 1 the Island in sight – hove to, Ships head to the Southward

 5 am: At Daylight the Island West 3 or 4 Leagues, at ¼ past 5 wore ship, out all boats and unstowed the anchors – overhauled a range of the Cables – Lieutenant Guthrie was sent in the whale boat to inform the Governor of the arrival of H M Ships – at ¾ past 6 bore away – Served the customary breakfast

 8 am: At 8 Extremes of the Island from S24°W to West High Mountain S60°W off shore 4 or 5 miles – at 9..30 abreast of the first battery, in 2d Reef Main Top Sail Variable winds and weather, at times calm, and at others gusts from the Valleys – The fort at Ladder Hill Saluted us with 15 Guns which we returned with an equal number

10 am: At 10..15 Anchored with the best Bower in 13 fathoms and veered away to ½ a Cable – furled Sails – found in the Bay an English Whaler, & a French Ship, the latter soon after put to Sea
