Remarks Monday October 1st

 1 pm: Fresh Breezes and fair weather At ½ past Noon in 1st Reefs Topsails and heuled to the wind – Saw a shark

 4 pm: Squally in 2d & 3d Reefs – down Top Gallant Yards – very severe puff of wind – High hill of Rottie S57°W Timor from N57°W to N58°E. High mountain in the Valley N18°E off shore 4 or 5 Miles

 5 pm: At 5..50 Tacked Ship – High Hill of Rottie WBS – North point of Rotie N60°W – Hill in the Valley (Timor) NbE½E off shore 4 Leagues – At 8 moderate and clear weather – at 9.25 Tacked Ship – Saw a fire on the summit of the Hill – Up Top Gallant Yards and 97t 3d Reefs – short sea from the SE

12 mid: At 12 Tacked Ship – at 2 Tacked again and set Top Gallant Sails – At 4 AM out whale Boat and cutter; at ½ past 5 Sent the Boats to lead a head of the Assistant – at 6 bore away extremes of Rottie S56W to S88W about 6 Leagues – Timor N60°W to N56°E High mountain in the Valley NNE½E off shore 2 Leagues – at 8 Rottie S58°W to S85°W 3 or 4 Leagues distant Timor N61°W to N61°E 5 or 6 Miles – at 8..25 East part of Rottie SWBS – At 10..20 South part of Timno9r and NE part of Rottie N3°W & S3°E – Soundings as per Column – at this time a strong current setting to the Eastward

11 am: At 11..30 Fore Top Sail sheet gave way refitted it again – very streong and sudden Squalls at times from The Timor shore – In 3d Reefs – made Assistants signal to examine the anchorage – Boats and her making sounding Signals – At Noon fresh gale with strong Squalls, Brig and boats leading – lead constantly going – Extremes of the Passage SWbS & South SW part of Coupang Bay N58°E distant 3 Miles – NE part of Pulo Samow N31°E distant 2½ Miles
