Tobin's Providence Logbook Jul 14-16, 1792

[H M S Providence Moored in Matavai Bay] Otaheite

July 14-16 1792

Saturday 14th First part moderate breeze and fair weather – middle part variable light airs and cloudy, latter part light airs with showers at times – PM people employed scraping and greasing down the topmasts, and washing the officers cabins and between decks with boiling water, destroyed a number of Cockroaches – received a turn of water per Launch people and carpenters variously employed – The Launch as well as the Assistantsquall employed in bringing on board bread fruit plants from the Post – In both of them were platforms for the purpose – Received 161 large pots and 148 small, served fresh bread fruit &c and received a plentifull supply

Sunday 15 First part showers of rain with fresh breezes and fair at times, middle part moderate breezes and cloudy with showers and lightning – latter part moderate breezes and dark cloudy weather rain at times – a moderate breeze from the westward at Sea all these 24 Hours – a heavy surf on the beach – PM The two Launches employed bringing on board plants, received 298 large pots and 82 small AM sent the Launch on shore for more plants received 64 large pots – people and carpenters variously employed preparing for Sea – loosed sails to dry – Served fresh pork bread fruit &c and received a plentifull supply

Monday 16 First part moderate breezes and dark cloudy weather with heavy showers of rain at times middle part light airs & cloudy weather latter part moderate &c cloudy with showers at times – PM received on board 182 large pots of plants – handed sails, the weather looking rainy AM The two Launches employed bringing on board plants – received 121 large pots 153 small; 39 Tubs and 26 Boxes – people and carpenters variously employed – got on board the Observatory – Served fresh pork bread fruit &c and received a moderate supply
