Tobin's Providence Logbook Feb 1, 1792

[H M Ship Providence from Table Bay Cape of Good Hope] towards Adventure Bay Van Diemens Land 1792

Wednesday February 1st

 1 pm: Strong Gales and cloudy, a long sea from the WSW close Reefed the Fore & Main Top Sail – shortened Sail for the Tender – at 3 more moderate – made sail

 6 pm: Saw numbers of Albatrosses, Sheerwaters of different kinds, Mother Careys Chickens and Silver Birds

 8 pm: Some Seaweed was seen, and a number of porpoises

10 pm: Strong Gales and cloudy weather a high Sea, the Ship rolling deep

 5 am: Saw a great number of Sheerwaters and porpoises

 8 am: Served thick Gruel and Portable Soup for breakfast – Cleaned below fore and aft and aired the Ship with fires – at 9 out 4th reefs Main Top Sail – more sea weed was seen
Served Krout and sweet wort as usual

12 noon: At Noon Fresh Gale and cloudy
   Latitude Observed 40°..25′ South
