Tobin's Providence Logbook Feb 2, 1792

H M Ship Providence from Table Bay Cape of Good Hope [towards Adventure Bay Van Diemens Land in 1792]

Thursday February 2d 1792

 1 pm: Fresh Gale and cloudy weather – Out 4th Reef Fore Top Sail

 3 pm: Out 3d Reefs of the Topsails

 4 pm: More moderate and the Sea much fallen, Up Top Gallant Yards, and out 2d Reefs of the Topsails set Top Gallant Sails and Staysails

 6 pm: Out 1st Reefs & set the Fore Top Mast Steering Sail – let in fresh Water and pumped it out again as usual at 8 Squally with light Showers in 1st Reefs

12 mid: AM Squally with Light Showers

 4 am: Fresh Gales & cloudy weather

 5 am: Set the Lower Steering Sails

 7 am: Served Burgoo and Portable Soup for Breakfast

 8 am: Moderate and cloudy – up all Chests & cleaned below fore and aft – Aired the Ship with fires – Krout and Wort as usual

11 am: Spoke the Assistant learned all well on board
Saw a number of the same kind of Birds as yesterday

12 noon: Moderate Breezes and cloudy
   Latitude Observed 40°..55′ South
