Log Book &c. of H M S Providence from Teneriffe towards [the Cape of Good Hope – 1791]

Friday September 9th 1791

 1 pm: Fresh Breezes and cloudy – at ½ past 1 In 1 Reef fore and aft Topsail at 2 PM fresh Breezes and Squally in 2 Reefs and Handed Top Gallant Sails down Jib and Staysails – at 3 More moderate made sail

 2 pm: Squally

 4 pm: A Dove settled in the Rigging

 7 pm: Saw several Whales blowing

 8 pm: Moderate and clear

11 pm: Inclining to Calm

 2 am: At 2 AM moderate breezes tacked ship to the Northward – Lightning to the Eastward

 4 am: At 4 AM Tacked Ship

 6 am: At 6 AM Saw the Land Bearing SSW at 7 the NE End of the Isle of Sal S¼E and the West Point SBW 6 or 7 Leagues

 7 am: Saw Several Whales

 8 am: Employed making points and gaskets

 9 am: Washed and cleaned the Ship

10 am: Saw a Man of war bird several sheerwaters and a small Land bird – Bonettas and flying fish about

12 noon: At Noon the North Mountain S86°E the NW Mountain S85°E The Center Mountain S74°E – and the West Mountain S35°E – A Squall Thunder and lightning in the NE Breeze increasing – Rigged Vessel at anchor S58°E The Extremes of the Island from S34°E to N85°E – Assistant in Company – Latitude Observed 16°..50′ North
