[Log Book &c. of H M S Providence from Teneriffe towards] the Cape of Good Hope – 1791

Saturday September 10th 1791

 2 pm: In 2d Reefs of the Topsails – at 3 PM in 3d Reefs Small Rain – at 4 PM Moderate and hazy Out 2d & 3d Reefs – and meade sail – saw a sail in the SW Quarter – At 5 PM the Island of Bonavista bore, the West End South and the SE End of the Isle of Sal NEbE. The Island of St. Nicholas WNW distant 9 Leagues

 9 pm: Light Airs and cloudy weather

12 mid: AM.

 1 am: Fresh Breezes and fair weather

 4 am: At 4 Shortened Sail and hove too with the Main Topsail to the Mast

 5 am: At ½ past 5 made sail The Island of Bonavist at day light bore East distant 6 or 7 Leagues – a small Land Birdf settled in the Rigging

 7 am: At ½ past 7 AM saw the Leton Rocks bearing S½E 6 or 7 Miles a very heavy surf running on them – Moderate Breeze, made sail – The People employed washing and mending their cloaths – At 8 AM The Leton Rocks S10°E 6 or 7 Miles. The South End of Bonavista N78°E 6 Leagues

12 noon: At Noon moderate and fair The Leton Rocks N42°E distant 3 Leagues
