Remarks on board His Majestys Brig Assistant

November 1792

Friday 16  First part Light Winds Calms & fine Weather PM Variously Employed AM Light Airs & Cloudy at 5 a heavy Squall with some Rain Close reefed the Topsail got down Top Gallant yards Struck Top Gallant masts & reefed the Courses AM Fresh breezes with heavy Squalls made & shortened sail as necessary got the Sheet anchor on board at Noon Fresh Gales & open Cloudy Weather in Company with the Providence

Saturday 17  Fresh breezes & Cloudy PM shifted the Job with a new one it being Split Seamen Employed making matts fidded the Top Gallant mast AM Light breezes & open Cloudy Weather out all reefs & up Top Gallant yards & set the Sails, saw several Albetross & dark Sheerwaters Employed in the Fore hold getting up Flour & Vinegar At Noon Light breezes & Clear in Company with the Providence

Sunday 18  Light breezes & fine Weather PM People employed washing & mending their Cloaths made & shortened sail as necessary AM Fresh breezes & Cloudy a swell from the SW Saw several Albecores Albetross Cape hens & Dark Sheerwaters at Noon Fresh breezes & Clear in Company with the Providence

Monday 19  Fresh breezes & hazey PM made & shortened sail as necessary AM Moderate & hazey Lost a Log & one line carried away a Top Gallant Studding sail boom ... set royals saw a Whale People employed working up Junk at Noon in Company with the Providence

Tuesday 20  Moderate breezes & hazey PM People employed as before & the Corporal of Marines cleaning small Arms made & shortened Sails as necessary at Midnight Calm & hazey with Lightning towards Noon Squally in Top Gallant sails 1st reef of the Topsails & Fore Fore & Aft Mainsail .. cleaned below .. Tacked Ship .. At Noon Fresh breezes & Squally in Company with the Providence

Wednesday 21  Fresh Gales & fine open People employed as before got down the Fore Top Gallant yard mad & shortened sail Occasionally AM Fresh breezes & hazey mad & shortened Sail Occasionally got down the Main Top Gallant yard Shifted Top Gallant sails got up Top Gallant yards & set the Sails, out reefs variously Employed at Noon Moderate breezes & fine Weather in Company with the Providence
