Remarks on board His Majestys Brig Assistant

March 1792

Wednesday 7  Moderate breezes & Hazey with constant drizling Rain Saw several Quaker birds & Port Egmont Hens .. A Cross heavy Swell Saw a great Quantity of Kelp at 5 Fidded the Main Topsail mast & got the yard up out reef of the Main Topsail & Set the Main Top Gallant Sail Middle part Moderate & Hazey Latter Fresh breezes & Squally with Rain & Hail In Squalls took in & set Sail Occasionally at ½ past 8 Fidded the Fore Top Gallant mast our Reef of the Fore Topsail got up the Fore Top Gallant yard & set the Sail Saw an Albetross At Noon Strong breezes & fine open Weather Providence ENE 1 Cable Served Portable Soup Sourkrout & Vinegar

Thursday 8  Fresh Breezes with Rain Saw an Albetross Port Egmont hen & a Small quantity of Kelp Made & Shortened Sail Occasionally to keep in our Station Middle parts Moderate & Clear AM at 4 Fresh breezes with Rain at Times Saw an Albetross & several Port Egmont hens Carpenter Employed making Hatches for the Storage Companion & Mess place Skylight Sailmaker Repairing a lower Studding Sail Cleaned between decks & Aired with Fires .. Unstowed the Bread Room & Found a leak about the Transom by which a quantity of Bread was damaged .. Restowed the Bread Room At Noon Moderate & Clear Weather Providence NEbE 1 Mile

Friday 9  Moderate breezes & open Cloudy Weather with Rain at Times Sailmaker & Carpenter Employed as before Middle parts Moderate breezes & open Cloudy Weather the Commodore made the Signal to come within Hail Answered Ditto ... Saw a Whale .. AM Light Airs & fine Weather Made & Shortened Sail Occasionally Got the Spare Sails up to Air Cleaned the Sail room & Dried it with Fires At Noon Light winds & fine pleasant Weather Providence SE ½ a Cable Served Sweet Wort & Portable Soup
