Remarks on board His Majestys Brig Assistant

January 1792

Saturday 7  Moderate breezes & Hazey PM Saw several Albetrosses Sailmaker mending the lower Studding Sail A heavy Sea from the NW Saw a Whale AM Ditto Weather with Squalls at ½ past 12 In Studding Sails Ringtail & Top Gallant Sails at 1 Fresh Gales In 1st & 2nd Reef of the Topsails & 1st. & 2nd. Reef of the Trysail at ½ past 4 Set a reefed Fore Topmast Staysail at 8 got down Top Gallant yards & struck Top Gallant masts .. Close Reefed the Topsails Single reefed the Fore Sail & reefed & handed the Main Sail At Noon Strong Gales with a heavy Sea Shiped a great quantity of Water on Deck Providence South ½ a Cable

Sunday 8  Strong Gales & Cloudy Shiped a great quantity of Water on deck PM Employed securing the Boats at 8 More moderate set the Jib & Fore Topmast Staysails & Swayed up the Main Top Gallant mast Out 3rd. & 2nd Reefs of the Main Topsail 2nd. & 1st. Reefs of the Trysail & 3rd. Reef of the Fore Topsail AM at 3 Moderate & fair Fidded the Fore Top Gallant mast Swayed up Top Gallant yards & set the Sails .. Out 1st. Reef of the Main & 2nd. & 1st. Reef of the Fore Top Sails .. Out Reef of the Courses & Fore Topmast Staysail At 10 Set Studding Sails Aired & served Slops to the Ships Company they having got wet in the Clerks Cabin ... Cleaned & dried well between decks with Fires ... Served Fresh Mutton Greens & Rice to the Ships Company which were boiled together in the Coppers & made them a most wholesome Meal At Noon Moderate & Clear Weather Providence SEbS ½ a Cable

Monday 9  Moderate breezes & pleasant Weather PM at 2 Shortened Sail & Hove too Main Topsail to the Mast the Providence sent her boat on board for our Commander who went on board her on duty at ¾ past 5 Shortened Sail & hove too Main Topsail to the mast our Commander Returned on board ½ past 6 Filled & made Sail AM Moderate & Clear made & shortened sail Occasionally People Employed getting water Wheat & Barley to hand Served Cocoa & Sugar to the Ships Company At Noon Ditto Weather Providence NW 1 Mile
