Samou S50°E 4 Leagues to EbN 5 or 6 Leagues
At Sunset – Pulo Samou EbS 6 or 7 Leagues
At 5:30 Extremes of Savu S30°W to S61°W off shore about 3 Leagues
At 8 Savu S11°E to S45°W off shore 3 Leagues
Extremes of Savu S67°E to S2°E off shore 6 or 7 Miles Benjoar S14°W to S23°W 3 or 4 Leagues
1 pm: Light Breezes & fine Weather hazey about the Horizon – At 30′ Saw a small low Island off the West End of Samou S3°E 3 or 4 Leagues At 1 Saw the Island Rottee from the Mast head and soon after the high Mountain upon it
4 pm: Calm & fine Weather 3 or 4 Leagues from the small Island
5 pm: At Sunset the Westermost Part of Rottee about Wouth 7 or 8 Leagues
6 pm: Before Dark – In 1st reefs
8 pm: Light Airs and Calms
10 pm: Lightening in the SW – A fresh Breeze sprung up
12 mid: Fresh Breezes and fair Weather
4 am: Ditto Weather At Daybreak – Saw the Island Savu bearing SWbW 3 or 4 Leagues Made all Sail
8 am: Moderate Breezes and fine Weather about 3 Leagues from the North End of Savu Cleared between Decks and washed below fore and aft. destroyed great Numbers of Cockroaches
10 am: At 10:30 Saw the Island Benjoar bearing SWbS
12 noon: At Noon Moderate Breezes and fair Weather distant 6 or 7 Miles from the North End of Savu – from Benjoar 5 or 4 Leagues Assistant leading
The Appearance of Savu is that of a beautiful, campaign cultivated Island, rather parched as most tropical
Islands are towards the Sea it is level and rather low, but rises into Hills of a moderate Height towards
the Center of the Island – Captain Cook touched here in the resolution, and put into a Harbour called
Saba on the North side of the Island – according to his Account the Produce is the same as that of
Timor [?] Carabous or Buffaloes answer exactly as do the Manners of the Inhabitants, only the Timorees are more
European whether the Dutch have thought it worth their while to make a regular settlement there
since the resolutions Time I cannot tell, then, the Island was divided into four Principalities or Kingdoms
subject to their own Chiefs, who all acknowledged some degree of Superiority to the Dutch who take that
advantage to monopolize all the Trades and being their rice and other Productions almost at their own Price,
most or all of which is sent to Timor, from whose Governor, the resident at Savu receives his Orders –
The North Point of the Island as near as we could determine is in Latitude [blank] and Longitude [blank] East
by the Time Keepers – Benjoar is a very small Island in Latitude [blank] and Longitude [blank] East
