Flinders's Providence Logbook Sep 14, 1792

Remarks Friday September 14th 1792 H.M.S. Providence

 1 pm: Fresh Breezes with a dark Sky to the NE

 2 pm: Light rain

 3 pm: Close reefed the Topsails

 4 pm: At 4 Weighed the Assistant and boats leading – Lead constantly going, Soundings from 5 to 6 Fathom soft Ground – ½ past 4 Tacked Ship per Signal from the Assistant. Strong Squalls of Wind and rain

 5 pm: At 5·20 Brought up with Best Bower in 6½ Fathom black sandy Bottom – The Brothers bearing from S61°E to 69°E 7′ – the Cap S60°E – Veered away ½ Cable – Hoisted in the Boats

 9 pm: Strong Gales and squally Weather Veered away the whole Cable Service – Struck Lower yards

12 mid: Strong Gales and cloudy Weather

 4 am: Hove in the half Cable Service

 5 am: At Day break Hoisted out the Whale Boat and sent her on board the Assistant for Lieutenant Portlock

 8 am: Fresh Gales and cloudy Weather Veered away the whole Cable Service

10 am: People worming and rounding the Cables – got them up out of the Tiers

12 noon: At Noon Fresh Gales and hazey Weather
