Bounty Logbook Remarks, May 16, 1788

Thursday, May. 15, 1788

1:00 pm Fresh Gales & Cloudy Weather. In 2nd Reefs.

3:00 pm Strong Gales & Squally. In Close Reef Topsails & handed Fore Topsail.

5:00 pm Very hard Gales and the Sea breaking. Obliged to be battened down.

7:00 pm Blowing very hard. In Main Topsail, the break of the Sea flying over the lower Yards.

10:00 pm A Violent breaking sea & our Course being in the trough of it, I hauled two points more up to ease the Ship. One of the Seas that broke on us carryed away & Stove our Quick Work & all the Waist boards.

Friday, May. 16, 1788

2:00 am Much Water got down the Companion which is the only place open.

4:00 am Ditto Weather. Up Main Sail.

6:00 amHove too under the Fore Sail.

8:00 am More Moderate, set the Reefed Main Sail and Close reefed Main Topsail on the Cap.

12:00 pm Strong Gales & Cloudy Weather with squalls and some bright intervals which gave me a good latitude. Saw a Whale & some Sheerwaters.
