Bounty Logbook Remarks, Apr. 24, 1788

Wednesday, Apr. 23, 1788

1:00 pm Strong Gales and Cloudy with Rain at times. At 1 Wore ship & set close Reefed Main Topsail.

4:00 pm More Moderate set close Reefed Fore Topsail and Out 4th and 3rd Reef of the Main Topsail.

8:00 pm Fresh Gale and Cloudy Weather close Reefed the Main Topsail.

Thursday, Apr. 24, 1788

12:00 amSqually. Handed Fore Topsail.

4:00 am Strong Gales and Squally with a confused Sea.

6:00 am Very hard Gale with very severe Squalls and Rain, handed the Main Topsail and Main Sail.

8:00 am Strong Gales and Cloudy Weather with bright intervals, set close reefed Main Topsail. Hauled the Foresail up to prevent the ship smoking.

12:00 pm Ditto Weather. Under Close Reefed Main Topsail and Reefed Foresail, the Sea breaking frequently over us. Served Mustard & Vinegar to the People & sweet Wort.

Remarks

The Weather now indicates that I have but just got away in time and my Invalides are rather Worse than better. Towards the Morning the Gale became very Strong and a high breaking Sea which obliges us to batten every Hatchway down, but what is particularly hard upon us is that going large from the Wind we cannot but with the greatest difficulty get a Fire to burn or any one bear the smoke. There were four Men to day that took it in turn to get the Dinner boiled, which was done with the utmost pain and torture notwithstanding all our endeavors to prevent the Smoke. Three of my Petty Officers and two Men were seized with a violent sickness and Vomiting and severe head Ach, and are obliged to keep below, so that I have Eleven Men and Officers not able to do Duty, but I trust a weeks run to the Northward will recover them. The Foresail is generally supposed to be the cause of a Ships Smoaking when going before the Wind, but I found it not to be the case, as I hauled it up without receiving any Advantage. I regret I did not bring a Small Cabouce[*] to Cook on Deck, as this would have been a great Service to us.
