H M S Providence in Port Morant Jamaica – 1793

Remarks Saturday February 16th

 1 pm: Fresh breezes and fair weather – in Top Gallant Sails at 1 Tacked Ship – at 2 Tacked Ship; Fishermans Bay Point NEnbE; The Ships in Morant Bay NW – off Shore about 2 Miles – at 3 Tacked Ship. at 3..30 Tacked Ship – unbent the Steering Sails –

 4 pm: at 4..00 Tacked Ship. Bowden Hill N½W – East End N47°E off shore 4 or 5 Miles – at 4..30 Tacked – at 5 Tacked – worked the Pumps as usual At Sun set the East End N59°East Yelhas Point W¾Squall Bowden Hill N3°W off Shore 1 Mile – Tacked Ship off Port Morant Harbour being too late to go in – at 6..10 Bowden Hill NWbN 2½ Mile – at 9 Tacked Ship – at Midnight Tacked Ship – At 1..30 AM Tacked Ship, hauled up the Courses in the Brails – at 4 wore Ship & set the Courses

 5 am: at 5..30 Bowden Hill N50°W Extremes of the Land N23°E to WBN off shore 6 or 7 Miles

 6 am: At 6..30 Tacked Ship, Wilsons Key, entrance of the Harbour WNW off shore 1½ Mile – at 7..20 hove too Head to the Eastward – Served thick portable Soup gruel for breakfast – At 8 the Extremes of Land NE½N to W½Squall Rocky Point NbW off shore 2 Miles – at 8..30 fitted the Top Sails and Tacked Ship – at 9 hove too; at ½ past wore Ship – at 10 wore Ship and stood for Port Morant at ½ past hauled round the East Point of the Harbour; at 10..59 brought up with the Best Bower in 7 fathom – furled sails and hoisted out the Boats anchor bearings Fort WbS Pinnock House NEbE½E Entrance of the Harbour SSE – veered to about the third of a Cable when we had only two feet to spare – Found here the Duckenfield, Lord Rodney, and another West India Ship
