H M S Providence from St Helena Islands towards [St. Vincents in the West Indies – 1793]

Remarks Friday January 11th

 1 pm: Moderate breeze and cloudy weather

 4 pm: Light Airs

 6 pm: Worked the Pumps as customary

 7 pm: Saw Porpoises

 8 pm: Ditto Weather

 9 pm: In Royals and Lower Steering Sails – Lightning in the NE Quarter

12 mid: Moderate breeze and fair weather

 4 am: Cloudy

 5 am: Set Royals, lower and Fore Top Gallant Steering Sail – Fine weather – Saw two fish called by Seamen Yellow Tails – (of the Dolphin kind) – Out 1st Reefs Top Sails – Served thick portable Soup gruel for breakfast – Cleaned dry below and aired with fires – Exercised great Guns and small Arms – At 10 made the Signal & Spoke the Assistant – all well on board – Served Portable Soup in the Pease for dinner – Broached a Puncheon of Spruce Beer – Saw flying fish
