Tobin's Providence Logbook Jan 9, 1793

H M S Providence from St Helena Islands towards [St. Vincents in the West Indies – 1793]

Remarks January 9th Wednesday

 1 pm: Moderate breezes and cloudy weather with Light Squalls and rain

 4 pm: Cloudy – Saw Bonettas, & Albacores – Sea Birds at a distance

 6 pm: Worked the Pumps as usual

 8 pm: Cloudy

12 mid: Ditto Weather – At ½ past 1 a dark Squall with heavy rain In Royals, Studding Sails, Spanker & Top Gallant Sails – Hauled up the Foresail to prevent running a head of the Assistant – shewed a light which was answered by her – at 3 a light breeze & settled rain – at 4 a heavy Shower

 6 am: Moderate breeze with Showers of Rain – set Top Gallant Sails, Fore Sail, Fore Top Mast, Lower, & Fore Top Gallant Steering Sails – Served thick portable Soup gruel for Breakfast – at 8 a moderate breeze and rainy weather – cleaned & dried below & besides the Brodies Stoves several wood in the hanging ones between decks – at 10 a heavy Squall & rain in steering & Top Gallant Sails – at 11 moderate Set steering & Top Gallant Sails – Served Krout & Portable Soup in the Pease for dinner

12 noon: At Noon moderate breeze & rainy weather – Broached a Puncheon of Spruce beer
