Tobin's Providence Logbook Dec 5, 1792

H M Ship Providence from Timor towards [St. Helena – 1792]

Remarks Wednesday December 5th

 1 pm: Strong gales with thick rain & mist

 2 pm: Fine weather – Saw Albatrosses, & Pintada birds, Sheerwaters, Mother Careys Chickens and Silver Birds for the first time since leaving warm weather – The head Sea going down – ½ past 3 out 3d Reef Fore & Main Top Sail – at 4 cloudy weather – swayed up Fore Top Gallant Mast Top Gallant Yards and set Top Gallant Sails

 6 pm: At 6 out 2d Reef Main & Mizen Top Sails – worked the pumps as usual

 8 pm: at 8 Fresh Gale and cloudy

 3 am: Moderate breeze and fair weather – set the Fore & Fore Top Mast Steering Sail

 5 am: Cloudy – made all Sail – Saw several whales and some fish spawn

 7 am: Served the usual breakfast

 8 am: Fresh breezes and cloudy weather – cleaned below & aired with fires – read the articles of War and punished John Divers Butcher with 7 Lashes

11 am: Served Krout and Portable Soup in the Pease for dinner – carpenters caulking the upper deck – Sailmaker at work – Saw Albatrosses, Sheerwaters, Pintadas, and silver birds – Served Slops to the Ships Company

12 noon: At Noon moderate breeze & fine weather
   Latitude Observed 35°..46′ South
