Tobin's Providence Logbook Oct 24, 1792

[H M Ship Providence from Timor towards] St. Helena – 1792

Wednesday October 24th

 1 pm: Strong gales and thick cloudy weather with squalls and spitting rain

 3 pm: In 3d Reef Fore Top Sail and down Top Gallant Yards – Saw many sheerwaters and a Tropic Bird

 5 pm: At 5 strong Gales and a high sea, struck Top Gallant Mast In 1st Reef of the Foresail and close reefed the Main Top Sail – Hoisted teh Whale boat from the Skids to the Main deck – at 8 handed the Mizen Topsail

12 mid: Dark Squally weather with light rain at times

 5 am: Out 1st Reef Fore Sail – and 1st & 2d Fore & Main Top Sails swayed up Top Gallant Masts

 8 am: Served the usual Breakfast

10 am: Cleaned below and aired with fires Sc Krout & Portable Soup in the Pease for Dinner – Some People picking Oakum

11 am: More moderate, set the Fore Top Mast Steering Sail

12 noon: Fresh Gale and dark cloudy weather – Assistant in Company
   Latitude Observed 14°..34′..28″ South
