Tobin's Providence Logbook Sep 20, 1792

 

Remarks Thursday 20th September

 1 pm: Fresh breezes and fair weather with haze – At 40 minutes past Noon made Signal for Assistant to steer West – Saw Boobies

 3 pm: At 3..10 Assistant made the Signal to come within hail and for the Boats to return on board – – Spoke her – Lieutenant Portlock came on board

 4 pm: At 4 Ditto Weather – no Land in sight – some swells

 5 pm: At 5 Lieutenant Portlock returned to the Assistant – At 5..20 bore up – at 30 minutes hove to at 40 minutes Wore Ship and hoisted in the whale Boat

 9 pm: Lightning to the Westward

12 mid: Wore Ship every hour during the night – The Assistant leading on each Tack

 4 am: Fresh breezes and cloudy

 5 am: At 5..30 hove too and lowered down the Boats sent them to the Assistant, – at 6..20 bore up – Assistant and Boats leading & making sounding signals – Passed thro' extensive patches of brown scum – Saw Gulls and a blue Heron

 8 am: Moderate and cloudy – cleaned below

 9 am: Sailmaker repairing the old Jib – served the usual Breakfast and Krout & Portable Soup in the Pease for dinner

10 am: At 10..50 saw what we took for a shoal in the NWOur soundings decreased at the time

12 noon: At Noon moderate breeze and fine weather
 The Assistant & Boats leading
   Latitude Observed 9°..56′ South
