Tobin's Providence Logbook Aug 31, 1792

H M Ship Providence from Matavai Bay Otaheite [towards Timor in the East Indies – 1792]

Remarks Friday August 31

 1 pm: Moderate breeze and fine weather – Saw Boobies Noddies and tropic birds

 3 pm: Water remarkably smooth

 4 pm: Saw a Carys Chicken – and flying fish

 5 pm: worked the Pumps

 7 pm: In steering Sails &c – and 2d Reefs Top Sails

 8 pm: Spoke the Assistant all well

12 mid: Two Noddies were taken

 1 am: Under an easy sail the Assistant leading a head with a light

 3 am: Saw Porpoises and Noddies

 5 am: At 5 moderate breeze and fine weather with a thick haze on the horizon – Out Reefs & set Steering Sails – Saw tropic birds on the water and a Boobie – Served the usual breakfast – Saw two Gulls and a Carys Chicken

 9 am: Portable Soup and sour Krout in the Pease for dinner

12 noon: At Noon moderate breeze and fine weather with haze on the horizon – Saw large flocks of the black kind of Gulls several patches of Rock weed, and numbers of Bonettas and flying fish – Saw Noddies
   Latitude Observed 9°..27′ South
