H M S Providence Moored in Matavai Bay Otaheite

April 11-15 1792

Wednesday April 11th 1792 – PM. Moderate breeze and fair weather wind WBN. Received a turn of water per Launch – at Sun set down Top Gallant Yards – at Midnight Ditto Wind & weather AM The Same wind & weather Carpenters employed caulking the Sides – at 8 Up Top Gallant Yards – Served fresh Pork, Bread fruit and Cocoa Nutts to the Ships Company at Noon moderate and fine weather – Received a plentiful supply of Pigs, bread fruit Cocoa Nutts &c
at 4 PM Thermometer 82° at 8 81° at 8 AM 76° at 12 AM 82°

Remarks – Thursday April 12
Moderate Breeze and fine weather – Scrubbed the bends – Carpenters employed caulking the Sides – Cloudy – Served Bread fruit &c &c
Lowered the Courses to dry – Unrove the Steering Sail Gun &c –
Received a plentiful Supply of Pork &c &c
At Noon a fresh breeze and fine weather

Friday April 13
Moderate Breeze and fine weather – Carpenters employed caulking the sides – AM Light Airs at 6 unmoored Ship, run a Kedge and hawser out to haul the Ship farther in towards the South Shore. Served Fresh Pork, Cocoa Nutts, Bread fruit &c – & received a plentiful Supply of the same Articles – Moored Ship the small Bower Anchor in 12½ fathoms, End of the Reef bearing N83°W Point Venus N22°E The Heads of Tarra from S9°W to S29°W – Extremes of the Island Morea from S68°W to West – Carpenters Caulking the Sides – Loosed Sails to dry – Broached a puncheon of Spruce Beer

Saturday April 14th Moderate breeze and fine weather – Carpenters caulking the Sides – AM Sent a party on Shore with the Botanists to erect a Tent, Received a moderate Supply of Provisions – Served Fresh Pork &c – Loosed Sails to dry – Washed the Ship fore and aft Carpenters Caulking the Sides

Sunday April 15th Light Airs and Calms – Furled Sails – Carpenters employed with Sides – AM Calm and cloudy weather – at 4 Light Airs and variable sent the Launch on shore with the Botanists and Plants Cleaned below and mustered in Divisions – Performed Divine Service – Served the usual provisions & received a [?] supply of Pigs and great quantity of fruit &c At Noon a moderate breeze and fair weather
