[Log &c. of H M S Providence from Port Praya in the Island] of St. Iago towards the Cape of Good Hope – 1791

Saturday October 8th

 1 pm: Unsettled weather

 2 pm: Saw an amazing number of flying fish

 4 pm: Moderate Breezes and cloudy – saw a Tropic Bird

 6 pm: Fresh Breezes with frequent squalls

 7 pm: In 1 Reef of ye Mizen Topsail

12 mid: Fresh Gale and fine clear weather

 4 am: Fine fresh Breezes and fair weather – saw a number of flying fish

 7 am: Cleaned below and aired ship with fires – The people employed washing and mending their cloathes, shifting their Hamacoes and airing their Bedding

11 am: Served Bore coal and Broached a Cask of Spruce Beer for the Men of the Ships Company

12 noon: At Noon The Assistant in Company
   Latitude Observed 8°..58′ South
