Log Book &c. of H M S Providence from Pt Praya in the Island [of St Iago towards the Cape of Good Hope – 1791]

Wednesday October 5th

 1 pm: Fresh Breezes and cloudy with a Southerly swell

 2 pm: Saw a number of porpoises and some portuguese Men of War

 7 pm: Fresh Gale and Hazy

 8 pm: A Fire in the Galley during the night

10 pm: Squally with small Rain in Top Gallant Sails

12 mid: Fresh Breezes and cloudy

 5 am: Fresh Breezes and cloudy weather

 6 am: Out 2d Reefs Main & Mizen Topsails

 7 am: Saw a Man of War Bird and other sea fowl, and a number of flying fish

 8 am: Fresh Gale and hazy

10 am: Cleaned below and aired with fires

11 am: Passing squalls with small Rain – saw several porpoises

12 noon: Fair weather – At Noon the Assistant in Company
   Latitude Observed 3°..29′ South
