Tobin's Providence Logbook Oct 4, 1791

[Log Book &c. of H M S Providence from Port Praya in the Island of] St Iago towards the Cape of Good Hope – 1791

Tuesday October 4th

 1 pm: Fresh Breezes and hazy

 2 pm: Saw a large shark and a number of other sea fish besides some Men of War birds – Performed the Ceremony usual on crossing the Equinoctial Line – The swell much abated

10 pm: A Luminous appearance in the water at times

11 pm: Fresh Breezes and cloudy weather In 2d Reefs of the Fore Topsail

12 mid: Saw a number of porpoises

 6 am: Fresh Breezes and hazy

 8 am: Fresh Breezes and cloudy with Squalls at times – made and shortened sail occasionally – Saw a great number of flying fish and some porpoises – Aired below with fires and cleanded the decks at ½ pat 11 In 2d Reefs of the Fore & Main Topsails

12 noon: Fresh Gale & Squally weather – The Assistant in Company
   No Observation
