Log Book &c. of H M S Providence for Port Praya in the Island [of St. Iago towards the Cape of Good Hope – 1791]

Tuesday September 13th 1791

 1 pm: Fresh Breezes and fair weather

 4 pm: Hazy

 6 pm: Dark and cloudy to the Southward with Thunder and Lightning in Top Gallant Sails and shortened sail – At ½ past 9 Thunder and Lightning with very heavy seas Squally from the Eastward

11 pm: Light Airs, calms, and fair weather

 1 am: Made sail

 5 am: Set the Studding Sails forward

 6 am: Washed the spar deck

 7 am: Light Airs and calms, loosed the spare sails to dry

 8 am: Employed making mats points and gaskets Carpenter and sailmakers respectively employed – Cleaned the Ship

11 am: Flying fish about – Got the wet cloaths up to dry – Served Wine to the Ships Company

12 noon: At Noon the Assistant in Company
 Latitude by an indifferent Observation 12°..27′ North
