Log Book &c. of H M Ship Providence from Spithead towards [the Cape of Good Hope – 1791]

Remarks Tuesday August 16th 1791

 1 pm: Light Winds and fair weather

 3 pm: Cloudy – 2 Sail in sight

 4 pm: A Swell from the SW

 8 pm: Light Airs and cloudy with lightnin in the NNW

12 mid: AM Threatning weather to the NW

 1 am: A Heavy squall at NNW with some lightning in the NE – shortened sail and took in 1 Reef [?] – Handed Top Gallant sails at ½ past 1 Clear weather set Top Gallant sails

 4 am: Clear weather – Tender in Company

 6 am: Fresh Breezes and fair weather

 7 am: Squally with Rain

 8 am: Employed cleaning ship making mats spunyarn Sennit &c

10 am: Dried the Small Sails

12 noon: At [Noon] Under under [sic] single Reefed Topsails Top Gallant sails and Mizen sail
   Latitude Observed 43°..36 North
