Tobin's Providence Logbook Jun 20-24, 1791


Monday 20th June 1791. Wind [?] Moderate and clear handed sails – at 8 down Top Gallant Yards – AM Ditto Weather – received two boxes of Essence of Spruce and a box of [?] Yeast

Tuesday 21—Wind NE – Moderate and clear employed working up Junk into Mats, Plats Gaskets &c – cleaned the Decks and got all clear for casting off –
Ships Draught of Water Foreward 14 Feet..10½ Inches Aft 15.. 2
AM Light Airs and cloudy Wind NW at 3 loosed Sails – The Master Assistants boat attended the Ship – Made all [?] again at 6 to the [? ?]

Wednesday 22d Wind Westerly – Squally and rain – Received 177 pounds fresh Beef at 2 Made the Signal for Assistance, got a Launch from the Yard to attend us – Cast off from the Hulk and made Sail in Company with H M. Armed Tender Assistant at 6 brought up at Gallions with the small Bower – veered away and moored Ship a Cable on the small Bower to the NE and ½ a Cable on the Best Bower to the SW. Handed Sails and Down Top Gallant Yards – found riding her H M Brig Otter and Speedwell Cutter – AM Ditto Weather at 9 Up Top Gallant Yards loosed Sails to dry – at Noon handed Sails

Thursday 23d June
Moderate and cloudy weather, stowed the spare Bower, and Stream Anchor rounded the Cables at Sun Set down Top Gallant Yards – AM Ditto Weather received 239 pounds of Beef – at 8 up Top Gallant Yards – shifted the two after Fore & Main Shrouds farther aft – set up the Lower and Topmast rigging fore and aft – Blackened the Bends

Friday 24th Fresh Breezes and clear – rattling down the Lower rigging – and making Mats, Points, and Gaskets AM Ditto Weather received on board 12 four Pounders – Gunners Stores, Shot &c Employed stowing it away – received 4½ Hogsheads Sugar
