Remarks on board His Majestys Brig Assistant

December 1792

Sunday 2  Moderate & fair Weather PM made & shortened Sail Occasionally to keep in our Station at ½ past 1 I went on board the Commodore on duty & at 7 returned on board People employed upon the rigging Sailmaker putting a reef in the Fore topmast Staysail unbent the old Fore Topmast Staysail & bent the new one AM Fresh breezes & open Cloudy weather in Studding sails reefed the Square Mainsail at ½ past 1 passed through a ripling of the Water at 5 saw 5 Whales some Albetross & Cape hens at 8 in 1st reef of the Topsails & Fore & aft Mainsail at ¼ past 3 reefed the Jib & Fore Topmast Stay sail at ½ past 10 Close reefed the Fore Topsail got down the Fore Top Gallant yard & struck the mast at Noon Fresh Gales & open Cloudy weather in Company with the Providence

Monday 3  Fresh Gales & hazey Weather PM Close reefed the Main Topsail & handed the Fore Topsail got down the Main Top Gallant yard & struck the mast at ½ past 3 wore Ship at 4 set the Fore Topsail at 6 close reefed ye Fore & Aft Mainsail & Fore Sail AM Fresh Gales & fair Weather set a reefed Jib at 3 more moderate out 2nd reef of the Fore & aft Main sail ½ past 4 fidded Top Gallant masts out 3rd & 2nd reef of the Topsails & 2nd reef of the Foresail got up Top gallant yards & set the Sails .. Latter part Moderate & hazey cleaned below washed with Vinegar & Aired with Fires at 9 out reefs of the Main Topsail Foresail Jib & Fore Topmast Staysail People variously employed about the rigging at Noon Light breezes & open Cloudy Weather in Company with the Providence

Tuesday 4  Light airs & clear PM People employed upon the Rigging in 1st reef of the Foresail & Topsails saw several Whales at 8 Tacked Ship Middle part Moderate & Clear AM Fresh Gales & cloudy at 2 in Top Gallant sails at 4 in 2nd reefs of the Topsails got down Top Gallant yards & struck the masts Close reefed the Topsails & Fore & Aft Mainsail Saw a Tern a Quaker bird several Mother Careys Chickens Blue Petrels & Pintado birds at 9 handed the Fore Topsail served Vinegar Sourkrout & Sugar &c at Noon Strong Gales & hazey in Company with the Providence

Wednesday 5  Fresh Gales & hazey with rain at Noon Wore Ship PM out 3rd & 2nd reefs of the Topsails & 2nd of the Fore & Aft Mainsail set the Fore Topsail fidded Top Gallant masts got up the Main Top Gallant yard & set the Sails AM Moderate & Cloudy got up the Fore Top Gallant yard & set the Sail out 1st reef of the Topsails & Fore & Aft Mainsail at [?] passed through great quantities of Fish spawn .. Aired the [?] Sails .. Cleaned & Aired below Decks with Fires Served Portable Soup Tea &c at Noon Fine Weather in Company with the Providence
