Remarks on board His Majestys Brig Assistant

August 1792

Tuesday 28  Moderate & fine Weather PM hauled the best bower Cable on deck cleaned the Tier & got a Butt of Water to hand Spliced the Small bower & spare Cables together .. clenched the end of the Best bower Cable & Coiled the Cables below again at 6 Answered the Signal to come within hail .. In 2nd reef of the Topsails caught a Noddy AM Moderate & fine Weather at 6 out reefs & set Top Gallant sails saw a Flock of Birds .. People employed upon the rigging Sailmaker mending Sails passed some wood & rock weed Served Sourkrout &c at Noon Moderate & fine In Company with the Providence

Wednesday 29  Moderate & pleasant Weather PM at 5 the Commodore made the Signal to come within hail stood towards him & at ½ past 6 Tacked & stood on our Course at 7 in Top Gallant sails & 2nd reef of the Topsails caught a Noddy AM Light breezes & fine at 5 out all reefs & set Top Gallant Sails .. discovered that the Fore Topmast Trussel Trees were broke secured the mast with a good lashing Carpenter Employed making new Trussel Trees Sailmaker mending Sails served sweet wort Sourkrout &c saw several Tropic birds & Noddys at Noon Fine Weather in Company with the Providence

Thursday 30  Light breezes & fine Weather PM Employed as before at 6 the Commodore made the Signal to come within hail answered it at 7 in 2nd reef of the Topsails & 1st of the Fore & Aft Mainsail AM Light breezes & open Cloudy Weather at 5 out reefs & set a Main Top Gallant Sail at 6 Saw the Coast of New Guinea the extreams in Sight from N26E to N47°E distant about 10 Leagues made the Signal to the Commodore for seeing Land in the NE Quarter Sailmaker Employed mending Sails & Seamen upon the rigging . Saw a Turtle several Noddys & 2 Tropic birds . served Sour krout &c as usual at Noon Moderate & fair in Company with the Providence

Friday 31  Moderate breezes & fine Weather PM at ½ past 12 saw the Land bearing from N22°E to N26°E distant 14 Leagues at 6 in 2nd reef of the Topsails & handed Top Gallant sails AM Light breezes & fine Weather at 5 out reefs & set Top Gallant sails & Studding Sails Cleaned between decks & washed with Vinegar People employed mending their Cloaths Saw several Boobys Noddys & Tropic Birds Served Sourkrout Sweet Wort Portable Soup &c Passed great Quantities of Rockweed Aired with Fires between Decks Fore & Aft At Noon Moderate & Fine Weather in Company with the Providence
