Remarks on board His Majestys Brig Assistant

August 1792

Thursday 23  Moderate & open Cloudy Weather PM People variously Employed at 6 Answered the Signal to come within hail Made & Shortened Sail Occasionally AM Moderate & clear, unbent the Main Top mast Staysail to repair . Served Sweet Wort Sourkrout & Portable Soup . Birds seen are Boobys & Tropic birds at Noon Moderate & fine Weather In Company with the Providence

Friday 24  Moderate & fine Weather PM Employed as before unbent the Old Fore & Aft Mainsail & bent the new One at 6 in Top Gallant Sails & the Topsails & Fore & Aft Mainsail Answered the Signal to come within hail AM Moderate & Cloudy at ½ past 5 out all reefs & set Top Gallant Sails & Studding Sails hauled up the Best bower Cable held a Survey on it as per Order & Condemned Forty [Sin?] Fathoms which was much chaffed & unfit for Service Saw a number of Tropic & other birds Served Portable Soup, Sourkrout Borecole &c at Noon Fresh breezes & pleasant Weather in Company with the Providence

Saturday 25  Moderate & Cloudy Weather PM Employed rounding the Serviceable part of the Best bower Cable & binding it at ½ past 5 in Studding sails Top Gallant sails 1st reef of the Main topsail & Fore & Aft Mainsail & 2nd of the Fore Topsails Answered the Signal to come within hail, made & shortened sail Occasionally to keep in our Station AM Moderate & hazey at ½ past 5 out all reefs & Set Top Gallant sails & Studding sails cleaned between decks broached the 5th Butt of Water in the Ground Tier, unbent the Fore Sail & Main Topsail & bent the best ones, got down the Main Top Gallant yard Fresh bent the sails Swayed the yard up again & set the Sail Served Sour krout Sweet Wort &c Saw some Tropic & Egg Birds & also a Noddy at Noon Moderate & fine Weather in Company with the Providence

Sunday 26  Moderate breezes & fine Weather PM unbent the old Fore Topsail & bent the Best one at ½ past 5 in Top Gallant sails 2nd reef of the Topsails & 1st of the Fore & Aft Mainsail AM Moderate & clear at ½ past 5 out all Reefs & made Sail served Sourkrout Borecole & Portable Soup . Saw several Noddys & Tropic Birds at Noon Moderate & fine Weather In Company with the Providence

Monday 27  Moderate & Cloudy Weather PM at 1 I went on board the Commodore on duty .. shiften[?] the Square Mainsail at 6 returned on board In 2nd reef of the Topsails & handed Top Gallant sails AM Moderate & clear at 5 out all reefs & set Top Gallant sails hauled the Small bower Cable on deck cleaned the Tier & broached the 6th Butt of Water Employed sewing Matts on the Foot of the Topsails Served Sourkrout Sweet Wort &c Birds seen are Mother Careys Chickens Noddys & Tropic At Noon Fine Weather in Company with the Providence
