Flinders's Providence Logbook Dec 5, 1792

Remarks ☿ [Wednesday] 5th Off the Cape of Good Hope

 1 pm: Strong Gales & thick rainy Weather.

 2 pm: Fair Weather Saw some Silver Birds and those usually seen – the blowing of some whales was likewise seen. Cloudy Weather Out 3rd reefs

 5 pm: Out 2nd reefs – Swayed up the Fore Top Gallant Mast. Got up Top Gallant yards and set the Sails.

 8 pm: Fresh Breezes & Cloudy Weather

12 mid: Ditto Weather – The Air very sharp.

 1 am: Carrying as much sail as we could to keep the Assistant near us.

 3 am: Moderate Breezes & fine Weather Daybreak – Set the Lower and Fore Top mast studding sails.

 5 am: Out all reefs. the Blowing of Whales seen at a Distance passed some Fields of Fish Spawn – Set Top Gallant studding sails & Fore Top Gallant royal.

 8 am: Moderate Breezes & Cloudy Weather

 9 am: Sailmakers repairing the Fore Top Gallant sail and Carpenters caulking on the upper Deck

10 am: The Articles of War read, previous to punishing John Divers (Butcher) for neglecting the Captains Stock – he received six Lashes

11 am: Many sea Birds about – Slops served.

12 noon: At Noon Moderate Breezes & fine Weather Grog served as usual every other Day.
