Flinders's Providence Logbook Aug 30, 1792

Remarks Thursday 30th In the South Sea

 1 pm: Light Breezes and fair Weather

 2 pm: Boats Crews exercised at Small Arms

 4 pm: Saw several Birds of the Gull species

 6 pm: In Studding sails Top Gallant sails and 2nd reefs

 7 pm: All well on board the Assistant – the usual Enquiries if she had seen any Appearance of Land

 8 pm: Fine Night heavy clouds flying over and some flashes of Lightning from the Northward

10 pm: Dew falling

12 mid: Ditto Weather Assistant a head carrying a Light

 2 am: Several Noddies hovering about the ship

 4 am: Light Breezes and cloudy Weather At ½ past 5 Saw Land from the Deck from NE½E to NNE½E

 6 am: Out reefs and set studding sails – Saw a Booby several Birds of the Gull kind and Numbers of flying Fish

 8 am: Cloudy, the Glare of the Sun prevented us seeing the Land at this Time

 9 am: Washed below fore and Aft, destroyed Numbers of Cockroaches. Aired the Cockpits with Stoves – People employed occasionally

12 noon: At Noon Land seen from the Mast head NNE to NE½E 11 or 12 Leagues – Fine Weather but hazey about the Horizon
