Bond's Providence Logbook Jul 26, 1792

Remarks &c Thursday 26 July 1792

 1 pm: Squally with showers of rian, saw great numbers of Flying fish – At ½ past 12 hove to; several canoes came off to the ship – At 1 made sail

 4 pm: At 4 extremes of the Island bore from S86°E to S9°E – round Hill S56°E Westmost Key S11°W – North part of the reef S15°W distant off shore 4 or 5 miles – Fresh gales and showery weather at 5 bore away – At 6 extremes of the Island from S83°E to S55°E – round Hill S75E distant 3 or 4 leagues – Worked the Pumps as usual and at 7 in 3rd reef Fore Top Sail – At 9 in 3rd reef Main Top Sail

12 mid: Strong gales with frequent squalls & light showers of rain – a great sea from the SE.

Memorandum Round Hill Whytutakee lay in the Latitude 18°:51′:45″ South Longitude 200°·18′ East is about [blank] miles in circumference is tolerably high and mostly covered with trees – The chief fruits are Cocoa Nuts, Bread fruit, Plantains &c. They have Fowls, but few or no Hogs & are well supplyed with fish. We found them robust, and rather friendly – Their Canoes are numerous and well sheltered by an impenetrable chain of small Islands & reefs which girt this shore

 5 am: Made more sail – saw some Tropic birds

 8 am: Fresh gales and cloudy with much sea. Set the Mainsail – washed the Gun, Orlop & Cockpit Decks – People employed making Mats

10 am: At 10 out 2nf reef Main Top Sail – Carpenters employed variously – Served fresh Pork; and Bisquit for the first time since our [?] at Otaheite

12 noon: At Noon a fresh gale and fair weather Assistant in company
   Latitude Observed 18°:45′:30″ South
