Remarks Tuesday 1st January 1793 [Towards] Assencion

 1 pm: Fine Weather

 4 pm: Unbent the 2nd best and bent the Old Fore Sail.

 5 pm: Saw Tropic Birds and Men of War Birds.

 6 pm: Let fresh Water into the Ship and worked the Pumps as usual.

 7 pm: Note. From the distance deduced at Noon by the X Latitude and bearings,

the Longitude of Assencion is 14°..28′ West

Difference of Longitude 8..41
Longitude of St. Helena by Requisite Tables 5..49
True Longitude of Asscension 14..30 West
Longitude by Requisite Tables 14..21 West
Latitude by Ditto 7..56½ South

 3 am: Altered the Course being to the Northward of Asscension.

 5 am: Saw the Island of Asscencion bearing SWbW.

 6 am: The Extremes S9°W to S25°W off Shore 5 Leagues. Saw Gannet Boobies Men of War and Tropic Birds and Mother Careys Chicken.

 8 am: Extents of the Island S8°E to S3°W about 8 Leagues. Served a Hot Breakfast as usual. Krout a half pint per Man their daily allowance.

10 am: Washed below and dried with Fires.

11 am: Sailmakers repairing the Fore Top Mast Stay Sail.

12 noon: Fine Weather. Asscension S22°E distant about 12 Leagues. Broached a Puncheon Spruce Beer.
 By the Difference Latitude & Bearings the distance is 15 Leagues from the Center of the Island.
   Assistant in Company.
