Remarks in Toahroah Harbour Wednesday 31^st Dece^r. 1788

Fresh breezes and fair W^r. the first and latter part, the middle Calm and Lightning. Wind ENE and the Therm^r. 81° and 83°. Cleared Hawse. Carpenters repairing the small Cutter. Two Venereals in the list.

The situation of Oparre is considerably warmer than Matavai, and for this reason, that lying within Point Venus the Trade Wind very frequently blows past it, and at any time never has it of equal continuance, whereas at Matavai you have generally a constant Wind unless Calm at sea. A very pleasant River runs into the sea about the middle of the Harbour where very fine water may be got with very little trouble.

An account of a small bed of Rocks that lie nearly midway between the Points of the Harbour. They have given it two Names, and consider it as two distinct places under the names of Toahroah and Tettyoorah. This last has more clear ground I beleive than where we lye but I shall be able to judge when I come to survey it, and connect the survey with that I have already made of Taowne.
