Sir. — In the third column of the second page, No. 1837, Vol. XXXV, of the Sydney Gazette, you asked the following question: — "Can any of our readers enlighten us as to the whereabouts of a place called Nantucky, to which (the Australian of yesterday informs us)the whaling ship Ploughboy belongs. We thought we had known the names at least of all the seaports from which whalers are forwarded to this quarter of the Globe, but we are constrained to confessour ignoraqnce not only of the geographical position but actually the existence of such a place as Nantucky"

      Upon referring to my Gazetteer, a popular work, I find it thus described: — "Nantucket, an island and county of the state of Massachusets; a considerable whale fishery is carried on here, and there are several spermaceti works. Longitude, 7, 30' West; latitude, 41, 20' North." The termination of the orthography between "tucky" and "tucket" must proceed from mere verbal accent.
