Three New Zealanders, named Teepati, Tyapo, and Tyderoo, were brought before the Police Magistrates yesterday, charged with murder under the following circumstances. — On the 1st May last, Captain Richard Lee, of the Achilles, fell in with a whale boat apparently of American build, in which were the three prisoners, labouring under various gun-shot wounds. On being taken on board, they stated that they were part of the crew of the American ship Ploughboy, of Nantucky[sic], Capt. Brown, and that seventeen days previous, they had quitted the ship in the following manner. They had formed part of the crew of a whale-boat, and had made fast to a whale, and from the unskilful manner in which they performed their duty in this respect, the Captain on their return on board, commenced firing at two of them as they were aloft, and wounded all three in the manner as they were found; upon which they made to one of the boats alongside, and effected their escape. In the whale boat were several articles of whaling-gear bearing the initials S. P. B. and also a potatoe keg, and a water breaker. The Ploughboy subsequently fell in with the Black Warrior, and the former reported that some New Zealanders who had formed part of their crew, had rose upon the rest of the crew at night, and killed several of them, but being overpowered by numbers, they hastily seized one of the boats, by favor of which, they escaped. Mr. Charles Fulloon, who is conversant with the New Zealand language, acted as interpreter between the Bench, and the accused, who were remanded until Monday next, to await further evidence.
