1:00 pm Strong Breezes and Cloudy
6:00 pm Served 1/24 pound of Bread and a Jill of water for supper.
11:00 pm Storms of Thunder Lightning and heavy Rain. Two people constantly bailing and so dark scarce able to see each other. No Stars to be seen so that our Steerage is very uncertain.
7:00 am Ditto Weather. Very wet and cold and our Situation truly unhappy
12:00 pm Ditto Wind & Rain and Sky dreadfully black and threatning a continuance A water Spout very near on board of us. Served 1/24 pound Bread & a Jill of water and being very wet and cold I gave an ounce of pork for Dinner to each person. Often washing and wringing our cloaths out of the Salt water for warmth.
Our Sun shine was of short duration. Strong Breezes and dark Gloomy Weather with Storms of Thunder Lightning and Rain added to our distresses this day, and the night was truly horrible and not a Star to be seen, so that our Steerage was uncertain. At dawn of day I found every person complaining, and some of them solliciting extra allowance, but I positively refused it. Our Situation is truly miserable. Always wet and suffering extreme Cold in the night without the least Shelter from the weather. Constantly bailing to keep the Boat from filling is perhaps not an evil to us as it gives exercise, it is however a difficult thing to beleive in our Situation. The little Rum I have is of great avail to us, when our nights are peculiarly distressing I issue a teaspoonfull to each person, which is always joyfull tidings when they hear of my intentions. At Noon a water Spout was very near on board of us. I issued an ounce of Pork in addition to the allowance of Bread and Jill of water, but before we began to eat every person striped and wrung their cloaths through the Sea water which we found warm and refreshing. The Sun is as much hid from us as in a winters day in England.
