H M Ship Providence from Matavai Otaheite [towards Timor in the East Indies – 1792]

Remarks Saturday July 28th

 1 pm: Fresh Gale and cloudy weather

 2 pm: Sailmakers employed repairing the old Fore Top Sail – People fitting the new and a new foresail – at 5 hoisted the preparation flag & made the Assistants Signal No 27 to steer WBS which was answered, at ½ past 5 made the Assistants signal No 50 to carry a light when dark, which was answered – In 3d Reef of ye Main, and close reefed the Fore and Mizen Top Sails, hauled up the foresail

12 mid: Strong Gales and cloudy weather Ship rolling deep

 2 am: handed the Mizen Top Sail

 4 am: Fresh Gale and dark cloudy weather set the Fore Sail

 7 am: Out 4th Reef Fore, and set the Mizen Top Sail

 8 am: Out 3d Reef Fore & Main Top Sails

 9 am: Out 2d Reefs – Fresh breeze and cloudy – set the Fore Top Mast Steering Sail

10 am: Squally with rain

11 am: Broached a Cask of Pork No 18 Contents 130 double pieces – Sailmaker employed repairing the old Fore Top Sail – Carpenters making Knees for the Launch – Cleaned dry below – At Noon a fresh gale and thick cloudy weather Assistant in Company
