Tobin's Providence Logbook Sep 17, 1791

Log Book &c. of H M S. Providence from Port Praya in the Island [of St. Iago towards the Cape of Good Hope – 1791]

Saturday September 17th 1791

 1 pm: Cloudy with Rain at times

 3 pm: Sprung up a Breeze from SSW – filled 3 Puncheons with Rain water

 6 pm: Fresh Breezes with very dark cloudy weather

 7 pm: Rainy weather ikn 2d Reefs of the Topsails

10 pm: Backed Mizen Topsail for the Assistant to come up

12 mid: Moderate and cloudy

 2 am: Set the Fore Top Gallant Sail and let the 2d Reef out of the Main Topsail

 6 am: Let 3d Reef out of the Fore and 1st Main Topsails and set the Fore Topmast Studding Sail

 8 am: Squally with very heavy wind hauled down the Fore Top Mast Studding Sail and clewed down the Topsails

10 am: Served Vinegar to the Crew

11 am: Cleaned dry below and got the west cloaths up to dry – AM filled two puncheons with Rain water from the Awnings – Aired below with fires

12 noon: At Noon Light Airs and fair – The Assistant in Company
   Latitude Observed 9°..25′ North
