Flinders's Providence Logbook Jan 16, 1793

Remarks ☿ [Wednesday] January 16th 1793 From St Helena

 1 pm: Fresh Breezes and cloudy Weather

 2 pm: Flying fish seen and a Bird about the Size of a Gull but of a different Species – Sailmakers having repaired the Fore Top Mast Studding sail set it. A considerable Swell from the NE.

 6 pm: Pumps worked as usual

 8 pm: Strong Breezes & Cloudy Weather – Carrying all possible Sail.

10 pm: Took in the Fore Top Mast Studding sail.

12 mid: Ditto Weather – the Water agitated by the Motion of the Ship is full of that Sparkling we have so often observed before and there are too several luminous Bodies which I take to be those gelatinous Substances of which I suppose the Sea in some Parts to be full particularly about the Cape good Hope – See remarks December 1st 1792 – Fore Top Mast Studding sail set at Daybreak

 8 am: Cloudy Weather

 9 am: Exercised great Guns – Marines exercised at Small Arms with Powder.

10 am: Sailmakers repairing the small sails.

11 am: Grog for the People today

12 noon: At Noon fbds & fair Weather a goo deal of Haze all over
Assistant in Company considerably ahead.
