CUEVA DE SUCRE Isabela Island

Permitted uses:  Interpretive and educational visits   Photography and filming

The Cueva de Sucre visitor site is located in the Agricultural Zone of Isabela Island, approximately 14 km from Puerto Villamil.

This place was part of the Agricultural Zone, but is currently a visitor site of the Galapagos National Park.

The place consists of a path of approximately 480 meters long, the same one that mostly passes through a strip of vegetation typical of the humid area, crosses through a lava tunnel and at the end reaches the facilities of a forest nursery, the same that is used to reproduce native and endemic plants.

The main objective of this site becoming part of the Protected Areas of Galapagos is to carry out the ecological restoration of a humid forest in the agricultural zone of Isabela, through the eradication of introduced species and the reforestation with native and endemic plants.

A cistern, an elevated tank and a house for volunteers and Park Rangers have also been built, the same ones who will be in charge of developing all the activities destined for ecological restoration.

Special indications

  • Bring a flashlight to light the path of the lava tunnel.

  • Information can be collected at the facilities of the Galapagos National Park, about the volunteer system and to be able to contribute to the ecological restoration program at this site.
